Collaborations – Philips Co-creation Sessions

Shaping the future of your oncology institute, together

To ensure that a medical center is ready to face the future, it is not enough to stay up-to-date with the latest innovations in technology. Higher-level strategic planning is necessary to break new ground and address opportunities in healthcare developments, community needs and technological innovations. The inspirational Philips Co-creation Sessions are designed to facilitate this process. C-suite executives of customers all over the world participate in such sessions.

Supporting customers in their strategic vision

In April 2015, for example, Clalit Health Services Group (the largest health care organization in Israel with about 3.8 million customers) joined such a two-day session in the Netherlands. Their comprehensive socio-medical perspective, which includes caring for the individual, the family and the community, places it among the most progressive public health organizations in the world.

To explore how Philips could support this customer in its goal of continued advancement of holistic and sophisticated medical care, five leading executives joined Philips on the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in April 2015.

Four-step approach for exploration

The Philips Co-creation Sessions are two-day collaborative sessions, consisting of creative workshops with executives from the invited customer and Philips business, functional and executive leaders. The process is designed to help our customers discover insights and trends, frame opportunities, ideate potential solutions and, finally, build upon their ideas to test and validate them.

The four keystone steps of the co-creation process.

Framing the initial thoughts: capturing the main themes, challenges and opportunities through a brainstorm session.

To do this, each Co-creation Session starts with a presentation from the invited customer, to capture ideas and frame the challenges and opportunities. From this, key discussion areas are defined. In the case of Clalit, these were oncology, neurology and hospital-to-home. After this presentation, a visit to the Philips Innovation Lab provides inspiration. This gives Philips specialists time to prepare presentations to show the current strategic outlook for each focus area and explore it in depth.

Deep-diving into what’s important

For each focus area, the presentation is followed by a collaborative ideation workshop that helps define next steps, both long-term and immediately actionable. The oncology session in April, for instance, explored patient and staff experience, workflow optimization, and personalized data.

At the end of that Co-creation Session, the visiting executives were invited to the Utrecht University Medical Center reference site to meet with researchers working on developing the innovative MR-HIFU and MR-LINAC systems.

A collaborative journey into the future

Feedback on the Philips Co-creation Sessions has been very positive. “When we start out, we don’t know exactly what we will need, we have to discover the future together. When we combine a deep understanding of the users and the trends that will impact our future requirements, we can innovate across the whole ecosystem,” said Diana Arsovic Nielsen, Innovation Director of the Region South Denmark and participant of an earlier session.

So far, around 25 sessions have been planned, with a wide variety of specialties and invited executives from around the world.
