Stockholm, Sweden – Capio St Görans Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit has implemented an innovative Artificial Intelligence (AI) solution that predicts early onset of sepsis, made possible thanks to a partnership between Philips and AlgoDx. AlgoDx’s sepsis software solution NAVOY® integrates with Philips’ Patient Data Management System (PDMS) IntelliSpace Critical Care and Anesthesia (ICCA), and provides a continuous ICU patient sepsis risk monitoring option for healthcare providers.

Collaborative ecosystem-centered approach addressing healthcare data silos

Timely and effective treatment of sepsis is crucial for patient survival, which necessarily means that this is a focus of Capio St Görans Hospital. The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is now introducing NAVOY®, a clinically validated decision support system based on AI.

Philips ICCA is a Patient Data Management System (PDMS) developed by Philips that centralizes and organizes patient data, including admission documents, vital signs, labs, and consult notes. It provides advanced clinical decision support software and structured documentation and analysis tools across the care continuum, transforming patient data into actionable information and enhancing the quality of patient care.

One of Philips trusted partners, AlgoDx, developed NAVOY®, a clinical decision support software that provides near real-time access to patient data, allowing the clinicians to make informed decisions quickly. NAVOY® uses a machine learning-based predictive algorithm to support healthcare providers with early sepsis detection, predicting the risk of ICU patients developing sepsis in the coming hours. It uses a combination of 20 different parameters, such as vital parameters, blood gas tests, laboratory values, gender, and age, which are automatically retrieved from ICUs patient data system ICCA. Navoy calculates and forwards the risk score to ICCA which then displays and highlights the values based on threshold provided by AlgoDx.

Identifying patients with high risk of sepsis

By integrating these two solutions, physicians, CMOs, and ICU staff can early identify when patients are at high risk of developing sepsis, within the coming three hours. Healthcare can quickly implement the right measures and increase the chances of saving lives.

"Philips is committed to improving clinical outcomes, increasing access to care, and driving productivity for healthcare professionals. This can only be achieved by creating an open eco-system with partners, by improving data interoperability and accessibility that will benefit patients, care givers, and the industry as a whole," says Shiv Gopalkrishnan, Business Leader EMR & Care Management, from Philips.

“NAVOY® has provided us with an efficient tool for early detection of patients at risk of developing sepsis and septic shock. Integrating NAVOY with our patient data management system, ICCA, gives us a possibility to improve the care of these patients”, says Dr Michael Wanecek, who has led the implementation of NAVOY® at St. Görans ICU.

"We are honored to have earned the confidence of a leading global health technology enterprise like Philips. By incorporating our cutting-edge sepsis management solution, we can augment clinical decision-making at the point-of care for better patient outcomes, operational efficiency, and financial performance of healthcare systems. The successful introduction of NAVOY® at St. Görans ICU marks a significant milestone, propelling us forward as we expand our reach", says David Becedas, CEO at AlgoDx.

Healthcare transformation driven by partnerships

The healthcare data landscape is highly fragmented, and a lack of data interoperability creates frustration for patients and healthcare professionals. This partnership is an example of the collaborative, ecosystem-centered approach to healthcare transformation driven by partnerships, which are essential in surmounting challenges such as staff shortages, fragmented care, and escalating costs.
